How does this file-sharing issue relate to legal Karaoke files that have been purchased either via download or disc and ripped? Does it address format-shifting?

I propose the subject of this thread be reworded as one of the following:

"KJs running off a illegal hard drive better read this!"

"Internet file-sharers better read this!"

"KJs using stolen or borrowed music better read this!"

I don't think it has any bearing on me as a legal, ethical computer-based host.

The point is that legal or not, PC hosts can expect to put up with some hassle, being checked, inconvenience, etc....

The illegals can expect worse.

On the other hand, ALL legal Hosts, PC AND disc based, can expect a huge reduction in competiion!

No problem here. Everything on my tower I have a corresponding disc with me at all times.

Of course. Money talks, and the entertainment industry bought him with campaign funds.

I don't carry my disks with me, if I get checked, he/she can follow me to my house and I will show him my disks. I only have one set up, and one set of disks for all my songs but the 22 I downloaded this weekend and I have print outs for receipts.

Actually, he/she will probably confiscate your equipment and write you a big flipping ticket of some kind. They are bullys. Bullys do not follow you to your house except to beat you up or in this case, shoot you. He/she would be a federal employee after all and shooting is much easier than beating.

Exactly! Since it is a FEDERAL offense, only a FEDERAL law enforcement officer, such as a US Marshall or FBI agent would have the authority, and then ONLY after obtaining a search warrant signed by a FEDERAL judge! Do you honestly believe that with all of the terrorism and other higher federal crimes they would spend the time necessary to pursue a lowly karaoke host? NOT!!!!

I'm totally against piracy, and agree that something should be done about it, but in reality, it's just not going to happen.

Agreed. Much like the college music-sharing cases there may be a few high-profile busts...but the overwhelming majority will go free.

The problem is that the music industry is greedy, and tried to control how the music will be used... even to what player will play it!

Pricing doesn't provide a business model consistent with consumer desires. If the music industry would cater to this 80% of pirating could be stopped. Suing people and pissing off your customers isn't a great way to improve business.

Legislation aside, market pressures will eventually force the music industry to either reevaluate its business model or it will perish.

if the original artists want to make more money - The record companies should just release Karaoke Versions of all their songs. SIMPLE - take out the LEAD VOCAL TRACK and add some synchronized lyrics -- I mean HOW HARD COULD IT BE ALREADY. Wouldn't you rather pay $2-3 per song if it was the original band??
Goodbye SOUNDCHOICE !!!

Eventually music will have to go to subscription. I don't see how it can be done otherwise and achieve the kind of revenue that the artists are seemingly demanding. If they continue to have this balkanized setup, it can never be enforced and their revenues will slip.

I agree why don't the record companies make their own Karaoke then you would know that the music is from the original artist and as for taking out the lead vocal heck it's most of the time it's mixed in after the music is done anyway that way the band gets it right and the singer gets it right with out everybody having to be there all at the same time. I'm sure that if sound choice and others can hire a band and do it that the record companies can get a graphic artist to do the words and get it all synced up. Then they would not have to worry about selling the license to someone they already own the rights.

One of my favorite geeky underground artists, Jonathan Coulton, does this very thing. You can buy karaoke versions of almost all his songs on his website, complete with graphics. It's a brilliant idea actually...every artist could do it!

Off topic: Speaking of which...if you guys don't have Coulton's version of Baby Got Back, you should. It's the same lyrics, but done in an "Adult Contemporary" style. Very funny to sing. LINK

Wow...Love this dude J. Coulton. A realist in an otherwise screwed up music industry. Going to do some downloads of his stuff. He deserves support.
