Good for you! Speaking of mic deals, I just got a AKG D5 Microphone for 69 bucks, which is a deal to beging with, and they sent me two!! Wired, but that is what I like...rivals a 58 Beta according to my buddy who has very expensive mics (one was like 3 grand, but he is a professional with a studio and all that crap).
Anyway, check them out! Abes of maine has them for 79 now, but I caught the deal.... |

What frequency range does the mic operate in mrscott? I'm wondering if it's in the 700MHz band and that might be why it was such a good deal. |

183.00 mhz if i'm not mistaken. I believe its a model that is 4 years old. Single channel tho. I checked it out online, the hand unit retails for 189, the base for 169, but the entire package new was 189, weird eh? The same receiver is also for the wireless guitar. I'm hoping it's gonna work for me just fine. The guy selling it was just needing "cash" for bills. So he was selling a few things cheap. |

| My mic bargain... |

About 2 years ago, a guy carrying a case came into the bar I was running and asked for the manager.
He was directed to me and then asked if I had any use for these microphones he had. It seems a former room-mate ran out on him owing him rent, and left some things at the house.
He opened up a hardshell Gator brand mic case and inside was 2 Shure Beta-58a's, 2 Beta 57's, a CAD drum mic complete set, and a wireless SM-58 L4 mic and receiver.
It took me 8 seconds to give him the 100 bucks he wanted for the whole thing, case included. |

That's a SWEET deal if I might say so. Way to go. |

That was probably the best deal that I've gotten on equipment. I often check the pawnshops and find some good deals. I rarely buy new equipment.
Congrads on your mic ! |

Got to use the bargain I bought over the weekend last night at my show. It works like a charm. Used it all night, absolutely NO problems. Looks like it was a real "bargain" for "Shure"..hehe. Now gonna keep my eyes open for another one.
I do have one question for some of the "techies" tho. Do good wireless mics (such as the Shure SM58) have built in compression? I found last night that the sound seemed to "compress" the closer the mic got to the speakers. I just walked around the bar before my show, seeing how it worked. It also seemed to compress simply by trying to use loud vocals. Was very nice!! |

Yes in a sense. They actually use what is called Companding as a way of combating the amount of noise introduced through the RF transmission in an effort to preserve the signal-to-noise ratio of the original source and provide the greatest possible dynamic range. This process also helps extend the range of the microphone. In companding, what happens is the signal is compressed at the transmitter and then when it reaches the receiver it is expanded again. The higher the quality of the wireless device, the less noticeable the effects of this process become. This is probably the second most notable difference to me between a cheap mic and a quality mic (first of course is the frequency response of the cartridge itself). |

Thanks Tony for that info. Was quite helpful actually. I learn something new each day. I am quite pleased with my bargain find. Now can't wait to use it in all my venues. Gonna be interesting. |
