I've tested all that have a demo and find I like Compuhost the best. Karma runs a close second if you're not reliant on filler music. But Compuhost has singer history so that if you get that one singer who only sings a small number of songs you can instantly load their songs into their que.
_________________
Note: statements made in my posts should be taken as opinions rather than law as I only state from my experiences info I think might be helpful for others. Best luck I've had is with the Brits over at Selectatrack and Tricerasoft. If it's really big, and not just out, one or both should have it. But they both lag behind the monthlies a bit.
_________________
Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Puke, and you're on your own.
I wish that the Oregon law would start in September, not January. Actually I wish it wouldn't start at all. And I'm a non-smoker. But getting smokers used to going outside in the dead of winter is going to be more challenging than if the law started in nice weather.

The other big concern in this state is the fate of the video poker and slot players. They are a huge source of revenue for many bars. I know from talking to room managers that quite a few would not be open without them. Practically all of the players are smokers and chain smoke as they play, it's part of the routine, and they may take their business elsewhere next year... either to casinos or just home.

Some Oregon legislators are predicting a 5-7% drop in state revenues due to reduced participation in state gambling operations. Right now gambling makes up around 20% of the state budget. Oregon is just shooting itself in the foot with this new law as written... without an exemption for bars.
_________________
Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Puke, and you're on your own.
This is a shot I took about 6:30 am. It is not a good shot but shows Chris one of my singers new at his job at KGWN Cheyenne WY. The lighting makes him look older than he is.
We watched him get engaged at our gig and make plans over the last year him and Krista are very talented and have been loyal customers.

He has been bugging me about doing their wedding reception which I gave them a deal of $300. Last week Krista gave me the the formal invitation to their wedding. I told them I cant afford a gift but I talked it over with Greg and told them we would give them a free 2 hour party. In a few minutes Chris asked me if we could apply this to the reception. When they were leaving I called Chris over and told him howabout we do it for $250? He asked for 4 hours? Yea or whatever. Absolutely luvem These are my kids..

This is one of those things I tried to explain in the Burnout thread and why you keep setting up week after week. It is full circle because years ago I worked there as an engineer and was chief engineer for KTVS a satellite station in CO. I trained a kid, rec him for KGWN and now he is the director of engineering in Cheyenne.
_________________
You do not get old because of many hours hosting or singing karaoke. Like Lonman says above, Wa St is smoke-free in public places (with the exception of tribal casinos, bars, etc.) Smoking is to take place no less than 25 feet from the entrance, but that aspect of the law is usually ignored.

It is wonderful for the nonsmokers, and actually once people got accustomed to trooping outside to do their butt sucking (oh, that is so gross), it really has had no impact on attendance. And after years of hosting in smoke-filled bars, it was so nice to forget about hanging my clothes outside when I got home, and having a shower to get the smoke smell out of my hair. (I'm not sure how well I'd deal with smoke again after so many years of a smoke-free environment.)
But I doubt that 97.9% of the singers and listeners can tell the differance.

The other 2.1% are just CRAZY to worry about it .....

But sometimes that 2.1% often includes your best singers, the vast majority crowd may not notice the difference in the songs but they DO notice when your best singers really get into your songs and do a great job. It is the few awesome singers that show up and sometimes make a so-so show into a great show. Many of them are music purists (and CRAZY about it).

That said it is not even going to be 2.1% at 192 or better bitrate....

But enough people (and enough of the purists) will notice at 128.

As I said before, if you have the CD and the (cheap) hard drive space, why not go with lossless .wav files that contain ALL of the digital sound info on the CD.

NewSinger @ Thu Aug 21, 2008 8:00 am wrote:

My fav local KJ was telling me that I should be able to get more Gb's for the dollar by buying from a third party, like at my local mega electronics super store, Fry's here in Houston.

Those "third party" hard drives are almost certainly illegal copies.

CAVS has a history of going to the very edge of legality (or beyond) in getting its hard drives full of low cost songs. Anyone that can undercut them price wise especially as well as quality wise is almost certainly not legit (for multi thousand song packs). I seriously doubt FRYs (or any major electronics store) would be able to sell such hard drives loaded with songs (unless they are in Chinese or some other foreign language) at anything like a reasonable price. The FRYs website does not have any such "bulk" karaoke for sale beyond the regular discount bin CD packs and magic Mics.

The problem is that all of the artists should be paid royalties on the songs they wrote, and that is a minimum of at least $0.25-$0.45 a song PER Copy sold.

In general unless it is a going out of business sale be very suspicious if you are paying less than $0.50 a song, and for major karoke brands like Soundchoice expect to pay even more on average. Sure you can find a used or overstock Karaoke Cd in the discount bin for $1-$2 with 15 songs but that is less than it cost to make, and it's initial wholesale price.
Ollie I applaud you for always trying new things.

Contests of any kind would be a regular crowd killer for me. I think it depends on the venue. It seems to work better for venues who don't have a regular crowd, but a new influx of people every night or a bar that doesn't rely on just karaoke to bring in their crowd. If you don't need the crowd that would come in for a contest to show up again I believe it would be fine. Contest people tend to show up just for the contest.

Good luck with what ever you decide.
_________________
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .<img src='http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r113/babzycue/dancecat.gif' onload="javascript:if(this.width > screen.width-200)this.width = (screen.width-200)" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r113/babzycue/dancecat.gif','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Posted image may have been reduced in size. I'm in Illinois. We are smoke free everywhere! I thought it would never happen, but it did. I was very worried at first about losing business. Most people that come to our bar do smoke.

It was odd how it came about. First each town made their own decision if they wanted to be smoke free. Worked like a charm for us because we were one of the few who didn't go smoke free, so like you guys said people would just come over from neighboring suburbs to our bar.

Then it became state law. It didn't hurt business at all. In fact I swear we have more business now. We are lucky enough to have a beautiful porch and beer garden where people can smoke. The owner even put heaters on the porch for winter time.
_________________
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .<img src='http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r113/babzycue/dancecat.gif' onload="javascript:if(this.width > screen.width-200)this.width = (screen.width-200)" onclick="javascript:window.open('http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r113/babzycue/dancecat.gif','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Posted image may have been reduced in size. I had a feedback problem with one of my wireless mics when one particular woman would sing. I figured it out when it happened with a second woman. Huge metal bracelets caused the problem. Problem was solved by having them remove the jewlery or hold the mic with the other hand.
Thanks Dynomyk. I was playing with a friend's Cavs JB 199 and see that her sound is ripped 128 but her system sounded okay. What is the recommended rate to rip? Had I been asked before seing it I would have gussed a minimum of 192.
Seems you may be the resident expert I need Babs. I bought the 203G CAVS unit (it actually arrived yesterday) for my personal use at home but without the pre-loaded hard drive. My fav local KJ was telling me that I should be able to get more Gb's for the dollar by buying from a third party, like at my local mega electronics super store, Fry's here in Houston. She has the hard drive that came pre-loaded with her commercial CAVS unit but wished she had bought third party herself afterwards. Hindsight kind of thing I think.

My question for you is that besides it having to be a USB drive what else should I be looking for in a HD for my new CAVS player. Brand name maybe, speed and any kind of special cabling for speed throughput or whatever else I should need. Any other tips would be helopful if you think of any off the top of your head regarding this setup. Currently I have about 5k+ CDG songs on discs and that number is growing weekly. I'd love to be able to put them on a hard drive accessed by my CAVS unit.

I hope you can help. Thanks.
Couldn't hurt my singing any. I'm going to give it a try too !

Incidently, I just left a comment in Singers Showcase so everything I said above.. Well, I guess I never needed to say it
_________________
Northeast United States runner up for the "Singing Hall of Shame".

"I Sing therefore I suck at it"
